KALLISTOS WARE ON PHILIP SHERRARD'S LIFE AND WORK | Joseph Roilidis
Born Timothy Richard Ware on 11 September 1934 to an Anglican family in Bath, Somerset, England. On 14 April 1958, at the age of 24, he converted to the Eastern Orthodox Church. From 1982, he held the titular bishopric of Diokleia in Phrygia under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

The icon, said Philip, is not just a picture to be hung up on a wall and regarded as one might regard any work of art. The icon, he said, exists in a context; taken out of this context, it loses its meaning. And the context of the icon is prayer and worship.
